My friend's fingers have been turning yellow. what does that mean?

It started showing on his pointer finger and is now spreading to his middle finger. He says that he has numbness in it but it does no hurt. He is a smoker but it is a very dark yellow and so we feel that there must be some other cause. The yellow goes form his nail down to his first knuckle. Is there any medical explanation or is it just from smoking?
