What could be causing the severe tingling in my hands (esp pad above my thumb) and I also have swollen ankles?

It is very painful at times to drive or sew (which is how I make extra money). I am 39, with no health problems. Very active as I have a 3 yr old. I am also a photographer which makes the tingling fingers a pain in the &&& if you know what I mean. Even talking on the cell phone, I have to switch hands often as the tingling/numbness is unbearable. Both hands tingly, both ankles swollen.
