How serious/major is a 2 level fusion C5, C6 back/neck surgery?

I know someone who has to get this done. They've been in major pain from numbness in the hands, too sharp pains in their back and arms. So, I just want some info on it like, is it a major surgery, whats the recovery time, and how hard it is if ur an athlete to get back into training after the surgery??
