Cell phone pictures disappeared? mini SD card problems?

I did not delete the pictures, and I'm not sure if they were really deleted because one day I had 435 pictures, not I have 42. I thought maybe my memory was full, but there is still 3GB left on my cell phone's memory card. And the pictures were randomly gone. I have some that are two years old (that didn't delete) and some that are from a week ago, and every where in between. I also did a couple different card recovery checks-with programs off the net-and they didn't show me anything that was missing. I would also like to say my phone got wet the other day, but I'm pretty sure I had all my pictures after I dried my HTC Droid Eris out. Could the card have been damaged? Would that cause a problem like this? I was just curious if this has ever happened to anyone else? Or if anyone knows how to fix it? There are a lot of important pictures I no longer have, and it's a bummer. Thank you for any help you can give me.
